friday, 23 june 2017 porto 2017 so we were able to book a quick week away in may, and we chose porto. we spent money staying in a vineyard and saved money staying in a small hotel off the beaten track. ac hotel, porto we started in porto and after seeing the price of hotels in the old tourist district chose the ac hotel which was a short distance from the river, but it was a quick taxi ride. we arrived at the hotel around 8pm, so checked in and caught an uber to the famous dom luís i bridge. we loved the area and the crowds, but when we walked through the restaurants we were disappointed. we picked a small cellar restaurant that was full and foolishly ordered turbot. why were we foolish, last time we were in portugal we had fresh turbot in albufera and we picked the fish. this time we had to wait for them to defrost and cook the fillets and it tasted like it. this was out fault and we made a decision to plan evening meals from this moment on. day 2 , we booked and went to taylor's port lodge restaurant, barao de fladgate. it was a monday night and was surprisingly empty. the views of porto are magnificent and the food competent and served by friendly and efficient staff. we had the tasting menu with the wine flight at a reasonable 55 euro with 19 euro for 4 wines which were topped up. my ac hotel porto review on trip advisor says ... 2 nights in porto and this hotel was good value, free parking and excellent breakfast. reception staff are smooth and helpful in multiple languages which is a real benefit when visiting this country. on the outskirts of town by the impressive dragon stadium, its a fair walk to the metro but don't mess about cheap taxis and even cheaper under means you are in the centre in 10 minutes. we are back on saturday and hope they have a tray of nata's on their impressive breakfast. quinta dos corvos - excellent white port lovely facilities, lovely tour. explained port and vintages. explained barrels are recycled. really interested. maria is very knowledgeable. then on to the tasting room and maria was very generous with the tasting once she realised we were going to take the very reasonable 29 euro to ship to uk. so we chose a selection of 6 port wines to be shipped and tasted 7 different types of port. day 3 , we hit the high road to the douro valley and the town of pinhao, where we were to spend two nights at quinta da la rosa pinhao is a quiet town that we are told has lovely tiles decorating the train station, we of corse did not visit this, instead we pulled up to a local restaurant for a veal and potato dish and a fantastic view of the douro river. relaxing on a vineyard so we stayed, ate and tasted here, so combining all options in this review. we stayed in eleanor suite which is a duplex apartment with bedroom and bathroom upstairs with juliet balcony, downstairs is a small sitting room and wardrobe space. out the front is a terrace overlooking the douro river and a very pleasant place to drink a glass of port. the room has an honesty bar with a sample of the vineyards wines and port, just let them know what you used at checkout. breakfast was plentiful and came with gorgeous portuguese nata, which everyone who visits portugal should try. a small egg custard in flaky pastry case, much better than an english egg custard. we ate in the restaurant both nights and found the menu very well crafted and offered portuguese dishes to a very high standard. first night we both had the monk-fish and shrimp rice in a fabulous seafood broth, could have eaten it again, but the next night chose the chicken which was served with a delicious reduction. hubby enjoyed kid goat which was delicately scented with herbs that included sage. hubby wanted me to say there was a fantastically rich sauce bringing the dish together. we took the wine tour on our first evening and although there is not much to see this time of year the faculties are spotlessly clean, and the guide drew a picture of men dancing while crushing the grapes, would be amazing to see in the autumn. overall visit was stunning and well worth the cost. day 5, we moved onto folgosa and the much cheaper hotel folgosa bargain for a new hotel booked a panoramic room and were given a room with a terrace looking out onto the douro river, a superb and panoramic view. hotel is strange in its setup as you are better walking through the bar to the first elevator then through reception to the second elevator to the rooms. there are steps to the restaurant. breakfast was plentiful, with fresh fruit salad, cheese and ham, fresh bread rolls and croissants. great hotel and great value stay. relaxing lunch at castas e pratos great lunch in this restaurant. seems to be a converted warehouse and restaurant s upstairs. ordered the seafood tagliatelle which came with a generous portion of shrimp and a delicious sauce. as designated driver i could not enjoy the bible of a wine list, dh enjoyed a douro white and moscato with the dessert. we ordered the hazelnut and apple desserts both were pretty as a picture and tasted delicious. 66 euro for lunch, we thought good value but you can eat much cheaper in portugal if you go "local" posted by joanne lea at 02:40 no comments: email this blogthis! share to twitter share to facebook share to pinterest sunday, 24 july 2016 the wilderness july 2016 half way through this meal/experience dh and i went through how often we had visited the wilderness in its many iterations in the last year, and we have done andy low & slow collaboration in kings heath nomad in kings heath nomad in dudley street #norules at nomad the bond drink event - wilderness master class the wilderness in all these visits the team exceeded our previous visit and to see this young energetic and dynamic team grow and develop their menu from a city garden to fine dining has been inspiring. when you walk in you are welcomed to a country idyll with moss on the walls and a green canopy of leaves overhead. the place is small and intimate, you cannot hear the neighbouring conversations but you can see their faces as they try the interesting concoctions developed by the kitchen. the choice is full story at £95 with complementing drinks or £55 for the food. there is a small and interesting drinks list with various cocktails, beer and wine choices for those not willing to try vodka made from the whey of the cheddar, more fool them. so straight in with the full story and a simple glass of digby english sparkling wine, in an old fashioned champagne coupe that after i looked it up this morning is not modelled on marie antonette breast. i think of my mum's 1970's babycham glasses, which i loved, as i loved this sparkling wine. the digby is the best english sparking wine i have tried, i have in my time charmed champagne houses in california talking about the small bubbles and biscuit taste and this wine ticks all the boxes. this was served with an amuse bouche called the wasteland and it's story is that it looks like the wilderness's old allotment in digbeth, with edible rubbish. this food is not rubbish, it's beautifully cooked pebbles of new potatoes dusted with nasturtium powder. chapter 1 - the shoreline two courses here, first fish and chips, served with birmingham lager mackeral a pea puree on a lettuce leaf but this does not mention a third of the ingredients on the plate and cannot describe the experience of eating this delicate fish course. we then had a second fish course of scallops cooked in embers, this is the first traditional dish of the evening, and shows a kitchen that knows how to serve fine food. we were served the largest scallop i have seen outside scotland perfectly cooked and served with a silver coated oyster leaf and bacon jam. the bacon jam should be sold in small jars, it was smoky, sweet, salty and bacon-y ... not yet a word but if you taste this jam it will be. this was served with a green gimlet, designed by rob wood from @40stpauls. chapter 2 - the forst & the fields so
